Monks Retreat Holiday Cottages

Behind the cottages our farm conservation area rises to 1,000ft. above sea level. From here just a short stroll from your cottage you have a magnificent and extensive panorama of 7 dales and can see way into the distance to the high moorlands of Axe edge and Kinder Scout.

Our river, the little Wye, twists, turns and babbles 12 miles on it’s way from the Victorian and Edwardian town of Buxton with it’s Pavilion Gardens and beautiful theatre, to the ever popular market town of Bakewell (home of the Bakewell pudding) where it becomes more serene and peaceful.

On it’s journey the river passes through Wye, Chee, Millers, Water-cum-Jolly and Monsal Dales and although we are on a quiet hillside, we are right in the centre offering endless walking or cycling along the Monsal Trail over the famous viaducts & tunnels (watch abseiling and rock climbing) or follow a network of paths through nature and wildlife conservancy areas that surround us, or explore the Limestone Way that passes near the cottages.

Many lovely old local villages hold wells dressing festivals throughout the summer, including Tideswell with it’s many hidden alleyways, cafe’s, traditional shops and magnificent ‘Cathedral of the Peak’
